I went back to 1.1.7, because the following releases had a strange problem: It coudn't render small images correctly, esp. GIFs. Even the history thumbnails were distorted and unusable. Also, scrolling is a lot smoother in 1.1.7.
The company got bought out by Blackberry and stopped developing for Windows Mobile. Which is too bad, because the latest version had some flaws but looked to be on its way to being the best WM browser available.
Iris is unfinished. The company flew the coop, so there are no more updates, and no support. I'd gladly use Iris if it didn't turn of the text wrap every time you zoom in. Text reflow only works in one zoom level: Tiny. To fix the enormous memory usage of Iris, here's a tip: Go to HKCU/IrisBrowser in the registry and set "FileMappingEnabled" to zero. If it's enabled, Iris plants a 32 mb. file in your cache directory on startup, before any sites have been loaded!
sucked!
Works very well.. especially with google gmail, reader, calendar etc. Have not been able to get flash working though :(
@saravanan, Skyfire delivers web content graphically via its proxy servers, so it doesn't allow certain functions you'd expect from a conventional browser, such as text selection & copy, find in page, or access to HTML pages you store on your device. Its purpose is chiefly to allow you to view multimedia content, such as videos, etc., and it does that extremely well. You still need PIE, Iris or Opera to give you the other functions.
skyfire is not working as much as.I expecting iris
Testing Guy, I can't guarantee that Skyfire 1.5 will work on all PDAs, but it sure works on my WM5 device! Their forum moderator says it wasn't designed for PDAs; it may run, but it isn't supported for them. One thing: It doesn't like the download links on this page; the files get corrupted. No problems with other sites, however, so I'd blame this site.
SkyFire works on PDAs? Cool! Gonna go check it out right now... Thanks for the update!
@Testing Guy: Too late! I'm finished with Opera. It uses so much memory that switching tasks is futile, anyway. It has other problems, too., as did 9.7b1. I've gone back to Iris 1.1.7, and if I want full web content, such as inline videos, etc., I run Skyfire, now that the latest version runs on my PDA. You wouldn't believe how well it displays the Times Square webcam, and also the demo video for Iris right on this page!
@Gerry: Ah. I see your prolem. My PDA has an OK hardkey. Perhaps you could send Opera an email about it. They definitely need an option to change their top bar back into the WM taskbar.
@Testing Guy, on my device, Opera 10b2 has no OK button to hit; all I get is the page title at the top -- even the Start Menu icon is missing! I had to assign a hardware button to get to the Today screen, then Opera us minimized and I can see the taskbar again.
Thanks for that link, Gerry. Neat page; I bookmarked it. I am beginning to agree with you about the hidden taskbar, although you can just hit "OK" to minimize Opera. MAN, SOMEONE needs to figure this whole browser problem OUT... ^_^
Testing Guy, you might find this forum thread interesting: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=325891
Testing Guy, Fennec requires WM6 or later and won't start on my device, which runs WM5. I've no plans to upgrade my hardware to accommodate software that will eventually be updated to outstrip my hardware once more. It's a vicious circle, not to mention costly and downright frustrating. BTW, Opera Mobile 10 isn't too bad, but still has shortcomings. It also uses way too much memory for the few features it adds. So do *all* these 3rd-party browsers; whereas PIE does *not*.
Just installed Fennec on my PDA. Gerry, you call Opera a memory hog, but you have no idea. The thing couldn't load with 27MB of RAM! It looks good on a desktop, but it still needs work for mobiles. And the keyboard is STILL shifted down over the softkeys! Wait for the beta...
Oh, P.S. If anyone knows anything about running Linux on PocketPC hardware, or a link to said info, I'd be greatly appreciative. I got to looking at Nokia's so-called "internet tablets," and, well... *wipes drool off computer.* ^_^
FENNEC IS OUT! The mobile Firefox browser (NOT the godforsaken project you and I talked about, Gerry... *shudders*) has been released in alpha form for Windows Mobile! I have yet to test it, but from the vector graphic on the homepage it looks pretty awesome :-). Here's a link: "http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fennec/1.0a3-wm/releasenotes/#install". Or, the CAB file: "http://download.mozilla.org/?product=fennec-1.0a3&os=winmo&lang=en-US". Use the first link, though, that has info about the app. YAY!
OK, beta 2 of Opera 10 is behaving itself better with regard to memory handling, and performance is pretty good. I couldn't import PIE favorites, so rather than creating a whole new set of bookmarks I created an HTML page of links and put that in the speed dial. I still miss the Start Menu, power and Wi-Fi icons on the titlebar, however. Also, there's no soft keyboard icon, so I had to assign a hardware button for that (to access keyboard shortcuts). If the PocketPCFreeware webmaster looks at his site once in a while, maybe he'll learn through us that Opera has been updated -- who knows.
