It solves the problem of crashing when using gps on omnia (which I have) or certain htc's. It looks like Google Maps for some reason wants to address the motion sensor in these devices - Google does not yet know what exactly causes the problem. The app toggles the sensor on and off.

Can someone explain, what is the problem, what is the solution, why the omia mention when they don't have HTC sdk, and ... why the hell should we care about outdated Google Maps versions ??
